RECY Buzz
Dear Tapestry,
I am very excited because next month is Tapestry’s weekend away in the mountains at Camp De Benneville Pines. This time last year I was anxious about going because I didn’t know what to expect and I like to know all the details before embarking on a new adventure, but today I do.
For me, De Benneville Pines is a peaceful sanctuary void of traffic, television, computers, cell phones, and errands. In place of those modern joys and burdens there are dirt roads, tall pine trees, singing birds, changing leaves, gurgling creeks, board games, books, and face to face conversations with friends and loved ones.
Camp De Benneville is a Unitarian Universalist retreat run by the Pacific Southwest District. They offer camping experiences for groups of all ages, throughout the year. Tapestry and Orange Coast UU Church are retreating the second weekend of October, the 10th-12th. I call it "camping" but it is not exactly that. We sleep in cabins of varying sizes equipped with large porches for bird watching, beds, bathrooms and showers. All our meals are lovingly prepared by the camp’s staff; there are meat, vegetarian, and vegan choices at all meals. You will not be roughing it.
You can spend your retreat as you wish: sleeping, reading, attending workshops, or hiking. The lodge has board games, a general store, couches, a wood burning fireplace, and a deck with picnic tables. There are two outdoor theatres for worship or other meetings, as well as an indoor chapel. There is a swimming pool and Jacuzzi, although in October the swimming pool will not available. Some other outdoor activities are ping pong, basketball, volleyball, a play structure, a meditation labyrinth, and, of course, hiking.
Although I was nervous about going last year, I am glad that I went; I even went back two weeks later! It is well worth the drive. Do not be shy about going alone. Campers share cabins or rooms and sit together at tables of eight, so if you go by yourself you will not be alone for long (unless you chose.) The staff is welcoming and warm; the camp's environment is conducive to making new friends and replenishing the spirit.
All of us need to take time to recharge and this is the perfect opportunity to do so before the holiday sprint to New Year's begins. I truly hope you have an opportunity to experience the majesty of the mountains and the beauty of friendship that saturate life at De Benneville Pines.
Sincerely,
Katelynn Riva
