"The great end in religious instruction is not to stamp our minds upon the young, but to stir up their own; Not to make them see with our eyes, but to look inquiringly and steadily with their own; Not to give them a definite amount of knowledge, but to inspire a fervent love of truth... In a word, the great end is to awake the soul, to excite and cherish spiritual life."

Religious Education for Children & Youth

Dear Tapestry,

District Assembly is this month, April 25- April 27th and because I had a tremendous experience last year at DA I want to explain what it is and why I recommend you attend. What is District Assembly or DA, as it is fondly called?

Don't let the name mislead you, it isn't “another meeting;” it is a celebration of Unitarian Universalism; a weekend full of worship, fun, and fellowship. It is called District Assembly because it is a gathering of UU congregations, fellowships, churches, and societies from the Pacific Southwest District (PSWD) of which Tapestry is a part; the PSWD includes Southern California, Nevada and Arizona. General Assembly, in June, is the annual gathering of UUs from across the United States.

This year District Assembly is in nearby Del Mar, a beautiful coastal drive or train ride away. DA has a program for children and one for youth . Parents can enjoy adult fellowship throughout the weekend or just for the day, while children create their own meaningful memories. The theme for 2008 is “Weaving a Tapestry of the Beloved Community” and the registration booklet which describes the weekend's banquets, ceremonies, workshops, and worship services is available online at the PSWD website. I hope to see you there

Sincerely,
Katelynn Riva
Director of Religious Education

About Gleaning

Gleaning? What’s that? Volunteers pick fresh produce in local agricultural fields. This food is then channeled to member agencies. Gleanings range from 25 to 100 volunteers per gleaning; Tapestry’s gleaning team will be 25 strong!! Only Skills Needed: Light physical labor, ability to work in an outdoor environment.

Who are we helping? The Second Harvest Food Bank. They currently serve 389 member charities, and help feed more than 220,000 individuals each month. Member charities include church pantries, shelters, senior centers, and homes for abused children.
Sign Up to help!! The sign up sheet is on the CRE board in the Social Hall.

Join Us! All ages welcome (children under 7 need to be escorted by a guardian) .

The Green Sanctuary Committee, Thank You

I want to recognize the Green Sanctuary Committee for its excellence in working with and including Explorers in their “Go Green” campaign. Explorers planted flowers outside Tapestry and will be growing gifts, planting trees in Mission Viejo, and learning about the water district and nature reserves during the spring. The Committee doesn't only supply the wonderful ideas for the children and youth but also follows through to make the idea a reality. I am grateful, Thank you. Katelynn

CRE Table and Box

Be sure to visit the CRE table upstairs, above the Social Hall, for the latest news and information related to Tapestry’s Explorers; flyers, forms, lesson plans, the CRE box and the Teaching Calendar are available at the table.
